Café Royale is the latest addition to the elegant 5-star Cape Royale Luxury Hotel on Green Point’s Main Road. It opened its doors in September 2015 offering breakfast and light lunches to guests and walk-in patrons. But recently, the sophisticated French-style bistro launched an artisanal cocktail and tapas menu and is now open for dinner and after-work drinks, too.
The cocktails are the creations of the manager, Wesley, and his staff. You will find old favourites like Margaritas with a new twist (read: loaded version) and completely new creations like Marie Antoinette, a fruity whiskey cocktail and La Dame Royale, a pink vodka cocktail with real watermelon. My personal favourite was Angel’s Treat with Amaretto, Nachtmusik and Amarula – a dream for every sweet tooth out there. Tip: Try the gin! Wesley distils it himself and it comes with different unusual flavours.
But taste isn’t everything. After all, you eat (and drink) with your eyes first! The presentation of the cocktails is quite unique and differs for every cocktail. The wow-effect certainly deserves six out of five stars! The pictures should give you a hint at what to expect.
The extensive tapas menu complements the cocktails beautifully. It includes everything you’d expect to be there like chilli poppers and vegetable spring rolls (nice ones!), but here, too, you can see that they like to do things differently. So, delicious items such as Jack Daniels chicken wings, grilled calamari with lemon aioli and Italian meatballs in marinara sauce are also found on the menu.
The new evening hours are from 15:00 to 23:00 and, with its up-beat vibe and excellent choice of music, Café Royale is certainly a great place to stop off at before heading to a night out on the town. The beautiful Renaissance ceiling paintings, the red velvet entrance curtain and the colour-changing light pieces on the tables will set the right mood for the evening.
Currently Café Royale runs a 2 for 3 tapas special. This “Beat the Traffic tapas promotion” is valid on Fridays only from 16:00 – 18:00 and will run through till the end of October.
