Who doesn’t like a toasted slice of bread with butter and a thick layer of jam? Whether you put it on your toast, in your yoghurt or on top your cake, jam is always a winner. Unfortunately, you can’t always be sure what it is in your jam, when you buy it off the shelf. Preservatives, added sugar and flavour enhancers are not exactly known to be healthy. But, to be honest, who has the time to make their own jam like Grandma did? Stirring for hours and hours. But luckily these days are over – thanks to the Ball® Home Preserving Kit. I attended a demonstration cooking recently and was blown away, how easily and quickly you can make your own jam. To prove it, here is the recipe of the Lemon Strawberry Jam we’ve made (it took us less than 45 min.):
- 1 L Crushed Strawberries
- 750 ml granulated sugar
- 1 large lemon
- Prepare preserving pot. Wash jars, lids and bands in hot, soapy water. Heat jars in simmering water. Set lids and bands aside.
- Combine crushed strawberries, grated zest of lemon and sugar in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly to dissolve sugar. Boil, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens and gels. Remove from heat. Skim off foam.
- Ladle hot jam into hot jars, one at a time, leaving 0.5 cm headspace. Wipe rim. Centre lids on jars. Apply bands and adjust to fingertip tight.
- Process filled jars in boiling water for 10 minutes. Remove pot lid. Wait 5 minutes, then remove jars and let them cool down.
The starter kit contains everything you need from jars to secure-grip jar lifter, funnel, measurement stick and everything else. No more messing around and the best part is that you can store your goodies for up to one year in the pantry. If they last that long, that is!
Of course, jam isn’t the only thing you can make with the preserving kit. Soups, salads, deserts, pickles, salsa, you name it. To find more recipes, check out www.freshpreserving.co.za/recipes.
